fabricate salvation

Wearing: studded asos dress and Report Juno heels that I borrowed from Arushi (you can find a similar pair over at Zalando).
Arushi // Me // Naina - As you can probably tell, we're super classy.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
{photographs by Malavika Bhatia who is pretty fucking awesome and takes gorgeous photos even in bad lighting}

Arushi, Naina and I went to Malavika's house the other day for dinner and since we were all dressed up, what better time for an impromptu photoshoot, right? It was one in the morning and the street lamp was the only source of light but I quite like the final product (Thank you, Mali!).

Moving on to more pressing matters.
I was talking to a friend the other day about existential therapy (because thats what we are studying in psychology right now) and I how I felt that it is just an excuse for lots of "me time" and was pretty self indulgent when she pointed out that I want to work in fashion someday and fashion is self indulgent. Which, now that I think about it, is to a certain extent true. Spending a sum close to the monthly income of a small family in a third world country on something like a handbag is pretty self indulgent but here is what I think is the difference between something like fashion and, in this case, existential therapy - people in fashion don't pretend to not be self indulgent. We don't pretend that the things we do have some great purpose or that the reason we're doing them is for some ultimate greater good.

But this got me thinking - are the people working in fashion self indulgent?
Fashion to me is a field where you have to work hard but can still have fun. Its a field where you will need to use your grey matter contrary to what some people think. Because marketing is no easy thing, my friend. Take it from someone who has been studying it for over a year. but can also use your creativity. Its a field that is exciting and challenging and if you're good at what you're doing, extremely rewarding maybe not monetarily, but there are other ways in which a job can be rewarding! *cough*freeclothes*cough* - which is not something you can say for every job out there.

I am in two minds about this because I feel that people working in fashion aren't self indulgent because at the end of the day, they work hard and even though it may be fun, it's by no means an easy field to be in. However, I do feel that simply buying lots of clothes and pretty shoes and expensive handbags is, at some level, self indulgent. Maybe I'm just biased towards the former because I too hope to work in fashion some day.
HOWEVER, if the people who simply like to buy lots of clothes and pretty shoes and expensive handbags didn't exist, the many different jobs there are in fashion wouldn't exist either. So we need self indulgent people to support the industry, right?
I'm going to stop because this could go on forever.

Tell me what you guys think:
Is a field that caters to the vain needs of The Rich Folk self indulgent? Or is it merely the Rich Folk who are self indulgent?

Oh and yea, I think rich ppl are self indulgent. I know some, and they annoy me. >.< Maybe not all, probs majority though.

I really think that as long as you've worked for what you earn, it's entirely your prerogative. After all it's upto you to decide what you do with your income and if I'd rather spend on clothes than food; so be it. Being self indulgent doesn't necessarily mean you need to show it off.

Obviously working in fashion is a hard but reasonably fun job. I think that's the best kind.

your question reminds me of this quote i read recently.

http://just-dance-love-sing-live.blogspot.com/2011/03/artist-is-somebody-who-creates-things.html

i don't really have a case for or against it. it could go on forever, yes, no matter which side i take.

You're quite lovely. Thanks for commenting. It's very hard for me to say if fashion self-indulgent for the rich because fashion appeals to so many different backgrounds. I live in a suburb in the US. Fashionable to these people is owning a Coach bag and would rip me apart if I mention that I wanted to buy a Louis Vuitton. Stating that I'm too materialistic. But then again fashion comes and goes but style is forever.

fashion is self indulgent but so is everything else in my opinion. we make money so we can indulgent in going to nice restaurants, have tastey food, have a nice house, etc etc. so I don't think fashion is anymore self indulgent than anything else :)

also you look FAB and love these night time photos!!

Cute photos - despite the light. Looks like you had fun :D I like!

About the fashion thing - I firmly believe that we should just live and let live. Its a person's own decision and their own money - as long as they are not affecting you, if they want to blow up their money on a pair of shoes or bag - who am I to judge? :) I, for one, splurge a lot on books which some may find idiotic, but its my money, so...

self-indulgence fuels fashion. but so does creativity, breaking boundaries and sticking to your own opinion despite people who disapprove...

love the dress! fashion can be self indulgent... but it doesn't have to be. you def don't have to buy a lot of fancy expensive stuff to be fashionable. so it kinda depends on the person i think
